2020 CAI-NC Annual Conference Educational Sessions ONLINE

The Annual Conference of the North Carolina Chapter of the Community Associations Institute will be virtual this year. While the Conference is officially next week, July 23-24, there will be many more educational opportunities on issues of concern to HOAs and condos.

Registered attendees at this year’s Conference will choose 4 of 12 learning sessions to attend on Conference days (July 23-24). But one of 12 recorded sessions will be opened each day for viewing online Monday-Thursday in the 3 weeks following the Conference. You can attend or re-attend any as part of Conference registration. In addition, presenters will “attend” online the day a session recording is released to answer live chat questions. All learning sessions will be available to registrants through September 15.

Law Firm Carolinas attorneys Jim Slaughter and Harmony Taylor will present on the following topics at this year’s Annual Conference:

Virtually There: Board, Membership & Committee Meetings and Violation Hearings in a COVID-19 World – Jim Slaughter (Thursday, July 23 at 1:30 pm)
COVID-19 concerns and restrictions will eventually ease, but board member and homeowner interest in holding meetings and hearings online will not. But if meetings are online, how do you deal with specific issues such as owner participation in board meetings, membership meetings, proxies, and budget ratification? And what about violation hearings? This program will take a look at statutes that impact meeting electronically as well as bylaws or rules provisions that can help meetings be more legal and run more smoothly.

Who’s Watching Who? Surveillance Cameras and the Law – Harmony Taylor (Friday, July 24 at 9:30 am)
A discussion of legal and practical considerations for communities related to the use of surveillance cameras and other emerging technologies by individuals and associations on private property and common areas. Privacy concerns, the pros and cons of the technology, and best practices to keep your community safe and out of the headlines will all be covered.
